Transformation of divorce processes in Georgia

Abstract

Divorce is a complicated social process. Its determining factors have not yet been sufficiently studied. Naturally, a general concept of its regularities has not been developed. The number of divorces is determined by many circumstances, among which the leading place is given to socio-cultural norms, which are determined by the social development of the country, existing forms of marriage, the status of women in society, and the family's way of life. The attitude of the legislation and religion of one or other country towards divorce is of great importance.


Historically, Georgia had a low divorce rate, which was mainly due to the Orthodox religion's attitude towards divorce, which practically excluded divorce. The period of the Soviet era in the 1930’s and the mid-1960’s is a classic example of how the state interfering in people's private lives and made divorces difficult by force of law.


Among the republics of the former USSR, Georgia had one of the lowest divorce rates. In recent years, the rise in divorce rates in Georgia took the form of a pandemic. Today, the overall divorce rate in Georgia is one of the highest in the world.


Based on relevant statistical information and calculations, the presented article analyzes the dynamics of divorces in Georgia. The losses of fertility caused by divorces in Georgia have been calculated.
