Abstract

Karl Sauer's seemingly simple formula: nature+culture=cultural landscape, raises many questions when going deeper. One of them concerns the degree of influence of culture and society on the environment. According to the UNESCO category of cultural landscape, it is related to the degree of harmonious coexistence of nature and society. In our opinion, the harmonious coexistence of society and nature is best seen in the case of landscapes of mountainous regions.

The paper discusses the characteristics that a cultural landscape should have. It is understood in the prism of Julian Steward's cultural ecology. Emphasis is also placed on the cultural landscape of Khevsureti, as one of the best examples of the harmonious coexistence of society and nature in the mountainous regions of Georgia.
