The article discusses the modern essence and importance of geography, the geoecological challenges of mountainous regions, the main concepts of sustainable development and its connection with geography, the current issues of spatial planning in Georgia and the characteristics of the geographical environment related to it, the principles and problems of school geographic education in Georgia and ways to optimize.
