Climate change and some geographical problems of mountainous regions

Abstract

The mountain landscape belongs to a specific landscape type. Mountains are often referred to as "water towers" (Mountains of the world, 2007), this term implies a large amount of fresh water and a high hydropower potential. Statistically, 1 out of 10 people live in mountainous regions. Mountainous areas are characterized by harsh climatic conditions, low amount of humus and poorly developed infrastructure, although there are regions that are considered comfortable and attractive environment for people from a socio-economic point of view.


The article discusses some geographical features of mountainous regions, climate change and its impact on mountainous regions, sustainable development and so-called "sustainable mountains".
